The coveted number one ranking in women’s tennis is currently in doubt. And all because of the ongoing tournament in the Spanish capital. Now there is a possibility that Naomi Osaka could lose the lead as soon as possible.

As for Naomi, she was unsuccessful in almost all tournaments last year, and in the tournament in Madrid she dropped out right before the first round. But at the time she was still ranked 21st in the world.

Of course, Perth still has plenty of opportunities to win the next tournaments, provided she doesn’t make too many mistakes in the current one. Things have not gone well for the Czech tennis player, for example, she missed out on Rome in 2018, was defeated in Round 3 at Roland Garros and lost in the first round at Wimbledon altogether.  In Madrid, the Czech has already reached the quarter-finals, where she will meet Kiki Bertens, who won the Stuttgart semi-finals not long ago.

Now there are two tennis players who have a chance to get ahead of Naomi at once, they are Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep. But it should be noted that the representative of Germany could not participate due to injury. Although according to her words it is not a serious injury, but still it is an obstacle on her way because she just couldn’t give it her all. There is a logic to recover and fully participate in future tournaments.

And as for the Romanian tennis player, she needs to win the title in order to rise to the top. But at the same time it is necessary for the Japanese player to lose in the tournament before reaching the semifinals, i.e. in 3 starting bouts. But there were already some difficulties at the start, and Sorribes-Tormo put up some serious resistance in 2 sets, but still failed to win the deciding game.

And now Federer’s next opponent is Dominic Thiem. And besides the last unpleasant defeat, there is another reason for a rematch – the Indiana Wales final. But it is unlikely that Roger will be the favourite on such a clay.
