The Spanish football championship, brought a predictable result throughout the season. But few would have predicted that the Royal Club would become champions after the 34th round of the league. By the end of the match, it was clear that the final result was beyond the reach of their opponents. At the moment, the gap to Sevilla is 17 points. Real Madrid CF won their first league title since the 1989/1990 season, and just as they had done then, guaranteed themselves the title with 4 rounds to go. And since then, the club from Madrid have won the trophy 9 times.
Of course, the management of the royal club deserves praise, as do the players themselves. And the team’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, who was the first to win the league title in all of Europe’s top 5 leagues, is singled out. And the team’s leading scorer, the Frenchman Karim Benzema, is a great contender for the Ballon d’Or. The striker scored his 42nd goal in 42 games last season. Also a legend, the Brazilian left-back Marcelo has won his 24th trophy with the club. In other words, the title-winning club have indeed achieved considerable results, and that deserves at least some respect. But there are doubts about the value of that record.
First of all, there is the weakness of their rivals – Sevilla, for example, only have 64 points, compared to 63 for the Catalan club and 61 for Atletico. There is a chance that neither team will even reach the figure of 75 points at the end of the season, and for this championship such results are quite unusual. If we look at the last season, all 4 clubs mentioned above passed this mark, but then another team from Madrid – Atletico Madrid became the champion.
As is often the case, Atletico pulled back after its triumph, but it cannot be said that the head coach’s tactics have become obsolete. But right now, the Spaniards cannot be called a contender for superclub status, even by the standards of the Spanish championship. Rather, it is the vulnerability of their opponents that has been exploited.
The problems of the main rival, the club from Catalonia, have been discussed many times. They have not been at their best since the start of the season and Ronald Koeman has not been at his best as head coach. It is immediately worth mentioning the group stage exit from the Champions League, and things did not go well in the Europa League. After that, the Dutchman was replaced by the club’s pupil, Xavi Hernandez, who has just a couple of years’ coaching experience in the Qatar championship. In the short term, Barça have failed to produce the results they want and cannot be said to be able to compete at this stage with the royal club. For Barcelona, the highlight of the whole season is their 4-0 win over Real Madrid. It’s a success, of course, but there’s no greater highlight. Real Madrid are champions after all and congratulations are in order.
